PHARES – FRANCE: Progressive Hybrid Architecture for Renewable Energy Solutions in islands
Deployment of a pilot farm of two tidal turbines
PHARES is a pioneering project led by AKUO ENERGY in partnership with SABELLA, committed to tidal energy projects in Ushant Island for several years already. This project will help to decarbonise the electricity generation system for the 800 inhabitants of the island, which currently burns off up to 2 million liters of fuel each year.
As the first independent renewable energy producer in France, AKUO Energy is involved, together with SABELLA, in the deployment of a pilot tidal farm as part of a multi-energy project for the benefit of Ushant Island. This project will see the construction and implementation of a hybrid insular energy model combining three different sources of renewable energy:
- two SABELLA tidal turbines of 15 meters rotor diameter and 500 kW each;
- one wind turbine of 0.9 MW;
- a photovoltaic installation of 500 kW;
- an energy storage system provided by EDF SEI.
These installations will bring the renewable energy ratio up to 80% of the energy mix of the island (today 100% fossil-fuel dependent).
PHARES receives public support and funding through the PIA 3 (Investment Program for the Future) and the Brittany region.
